Are soldiers, firemen and policemen heroes?

just because they serve in those occupations. Seems to me that the media is a little loose with the term hero. I always thought that a hero was somebody that did something extraordinary (i.e. not part of your regular job) and at great risk to one self in order to save the lives of others. What are your thoughts
