My Windows Media Player doesn't work right. Video sometimes slow or fast. Audio is horrible! ?

The audio sounds like Alvin n the Chipmunks, only sped up! Any video/audio doesn't play properly. Can't listen to music or watch video at its normal speed. I'm running Windows 2000 and Windows Media Player series 9. Is it as easy as removing the currently installed program and re-installing it?
