Has anyone ever heard of bread, dripping and bovril?
During the war we kids would walk about five miles to a pithead swimming baths for a good swim... After our swimming we would nip into the pit canteen and buy a slice of bread and dripping, sometimes the lady serving would spread on a very thin spreading of Marmite or Bovril, We always cleared them out of crusts, mainly as they were much thicker than ordinary slices of bread. they used to cost us half a pence each, work it out that 24 half pences would = 5 new pence. We often had to make a choice of riding home on a bus, or eating the food and walking. Walking usually won, 4 slices of bread & dripping for 2p, good stuff that stuck to your ribs............Happy Days of youth.
