I recently acquired a small barrel cactus plant. how should i judge how much water to use when watering it?

I read at various websites that i should water it once a month if established, but if recently repotted it should be watered twice a month. I also read that april to september is when it should be watered. the other months no water at all Please tell me if this is correct.
